CleanGredients - the online resource for green formulation®

CleanGredients represents a community of practice that brings together industry, government and non-profit stakholders who have a vested interest in advancing the use of green chemistry in products.

It is an online database of chemical products (a.k.a. “ingredients”) used primarily to formulate residential, institutional, industrial and janitorial cleaning products that have been pre-approved to meet the U.S. EPA DfE Safer Product Labeling Program. CleanGredients is an indispensable purchasing resource for formulators who are seeking to find suppliers selling chemical ingredients that will help them to obtain the DfE label in a manner that reduces risk to their business, saves them money and gets their products to market faster.

James Ewell
Sustainable Materials Senior Director

As a member of the original team that founded GreenBlue, James re-joined the organization as Director of the GreenBlue Chemicals program in September 2011. During his initial time at GreenBlue, James helped establish the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and also co-created the Sustainable Textile Metrics that evolved into the NSF/ANSI 336 Standard for the Assessment of Sustainable Commercial Furnishing Fabrics.

In his current role, James oversees the expansion of the GreenBlue Chemicals program by spearheading the development of tools and resources that compliment and leverage the CleanGredients platform and that are necessary for industry to identity and promote safer chemicals in the design and manufacturing of products.

In the intervening years between his time at GreenBlue, James was Director of Consulting and Senior Project Manager at McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, where he developed and implemented criteria for designing and manufacturing sustainable products and improving corporate practices. There he worked with major corporate clients including Ford Motor Co., P&G, Seventh Generation, Shaw Industries, Victor Group, Energizer and Replenish, among many other companies from a diversity of industrial sectors.

James has also held positions at organizations such as the Piedmont Environmental Council, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the International Center for Development Policy. James holds an MA in Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia, as well as a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In his time away from the office, James enjoys organic vegetable gardening, scuba diving, as well as learning other primitive “earth skills.”
